I enjoyed my time with this game though it is a little uneventful playing by yourself. Once behind the wheel of your noble ship, the game turns into a space flight simulator with the full multiple axis control scheme allowing you to turn, rise and fall, and spin to get where you need to go. I would actually recommend playing with another player because the world is rather empty by yourself because outer space is by nature…well, spacious. In multiplayer if course you can fight against whomever is on the server. In singleplayer mode the only threat comes from the few pirate ships that are roaming the galaxy. Right now there is no survivability element and the only way to die is to be shot down. On release there will be more of a survival element where the player must collect resources such as food to keep the character alive in space. While it is in its alpha state there are many features that are planned for the final release but are not included yet. I of course do not usually have the creativity or patience to make something massive so it is the small ships for me. You can create small and fast fighters and scout ships or massive freighters and armored hulls. The more items you have to power, the more generators you will need. In order for this to work though you must also add generators to the ship to provide power. After that you add thrusters and other desired blocks to add a whole variety of different functions. They are also extremely valuable so it is important not to lose it or let it be destroyed. You start with a ship core which is necessary to make a spaceship. The ship building is done in the same way you would build in Minecraft with the player attaching different cubes together in whatever formation they desire. You earn credits by selling items which then can be used to buy engines, weapons, shields, and even decorative items. Should the store run out you simply go and look for another one as they are theoretically endless. The shops have limited inventory of each item and the price depends on the amount in stock. By collecting materials you can either use them to build on to your ship or sell at the numerous shops for other parts. Along with the ship building is an almost endless space to explore for materials, shops, other captains and even pirates. The game allows you to take blocks of either simple building materials or complex machines and combine them to create a spaceship in whatever way you can imagine. The purpose of the game is to create a 3D space exploration and building game in a sandbox format. There is, however, no difference in the gameplay or software received if you pay or not so ultimately paying it up to you if you want to support the game. It is unclear if the game will no longer be free after release and whether or not that donation will net you a full copy upon its release. In the alpha stage it can be downloaded completely for free or you can make a $3.00 donation to the games progress. StarMade is an indie project currently in its alpha stage that was inspired by Minecraft and similar voxel “cube art” games.
